In Kenya’s low-income communities, many children miss out on nurturing care and early learning in their first years. By the time they start school, they’re already behind—and without support, the gap keeps growing. We work with caregivers, teachers and communities to strengthen early learning, restore foundational literacy and numeracy for children falling behind in school, and rebuild pathways back into education for children who are out of school.
Education Empowerment for Rural and Urban Slums Initiative (EERUi) is a nonprofit social impact organization based in Kenya, dedicated to transforming the educational journey of children in low-income communities. We support parents, caregivers, and educators to create nurturing, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments where all children can thrive.
For children already in school but falling behind, or who have dropped out, EERUi delivers foundational literacy and numeracy through Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), an evidence-based approach that groups children by learning level rather than age or grade. We integrate the Luminos learning methods, like joyful learning and community teachers, to create safe and motivating classrooms to support out-of-school and lagging children, paired with structured support for re-enrollment and sustained attendance.
We also strengthen early learning before children enter school. We work with informal and home based childcare providers to improve nurturing care, early stimulation, and school readiness for young children, and we engage parents through community based sessions that build responsive caregiving practices at home.
Across both programs, we promote locally grounded materials and practices so that learning gains hold up over time in the communities we serve.
We partner with government and community members to deliver our programs.
With government, we work through the public school system. We train teachers to deliver our foundational literacy and numeracy methods in their own classrooms, then monitor and mentor them as they implement it.
With the community, we work through community teachers. They provide structured catch-up support to out-of-school children and support their enrolment into formal schooling.
We also work directly with caregivers of young children, training them in nurturing care and early stimulation practices they can use at home to prepare children for school.
